Nags Head

“Trebles 4 Singles” screams the advertising at the front of this building. Whether the word ‘singles’ refers to a singular shot of a spirit, or, one of the many young free and, er, single people who frequent this establishment, thepubsofyork.com are unsure.

Regardless, the Nags Head is famous locally for this drink offer and sits proudly in the middle of Micklegate. As such, it is generally always busy, even on a Sunday night when it also feels the need to employ bouncers, which gives you some idea of what sort of establishment this is.

The interior of this bar (which dates back to at least 1772 and is grade II listed) is grotesque, and we imagine, resembles the colour of Violet Beauregard’s underpants when she spontaneously inflates like a balloon (or a blueberry, as Mr Wonka quite rightly points out to Mr Beauregard, as his daughter rapidly achieves the size of three Vanessa Feltzs’ or two Giant Haystacks’).

This garish purple combined with many a mirror and shiny aluminium tread plates located below dado level gives thepubofyork.com a headache, even before any drinks offers are sampled. Things get worse when you actually peruse the drinks on offer – expensive lagers and ciders (all the usual suspects are here) and John Smiths Smooth are the only options available to those who do not want to sample a treble for the price of a single.

The covered beer terrace provides a little respite from the kaleidoscope of vomit inducing colours inside, but only if you like drinking your tipple in bike stores or potting sheds whilst being constantly peppered with; “s’cuse me mate”.

Many moons ago, thepubsofyork.com visited places like this in search of cheap, intoxicating liquor and young nubile companions, as many young, nubile people still do today. Those days however, are long gone, and we would rather share a fate similar to Miss Beauregard’s juicing at the hands of several Oompa-Loompas than make visiting the Nags Head a regular occurrence.
