July 2010

Have recently visited the Bay Horse Marygate and what a surprise! The place has been refurbished, the staff are in uniform and there is an excellent menu with lots of fantastic specials on the board, all cooked fresh to order. There are real ales and a lovely wine list. Everyone was friendly and the service was great. We actually went in to eat because we were allowed to use the toilet facilities after our long car journey without feeling guilty.

I would thoroughly reccommend this venue to anyone - it will certainly be the place to beat.

The map is wrong, out by about 50 yards, I live local and wandered in for a quick pint, place was busy with tourists and it was £3 for a pint of 4.2% bitter. Funnily, the week before it was £2.50 for a pint of 5%.

Sadly the standard has fallen since opening - as has their commitment to local small breweries. At first glance it seems that the lure of cheap deals with that Bette Noire of breweries Greene King has caused this. Last time I visited a couple of weeks ago they had 5 beers on - 4 from the GK stable though most people won't have spotted it.

The reason for my total aversion to anything Greene King is that they have a history of taking over small breweries and shutting them and brewing the beer elsewhere - which means that the beer never tastes the same again. Morland, Ruddles and Ridleys beers are all shadows of their former glory.
