About

thepubsofyork.com was created by two young(ish) fellows with less hair then they should have, bigger bellies than is strictly necessary and with a passion for beer, alehouses, taverns and inns – or ‘Pubs’ as they have been generally known as since the 19th Century.

thepubsofyork.com aims to be a companion for drinking in pubs, in and around the fair city of York. With regular contributions and features from the editors, and with comments and reviews from tourists, locals and the odd vagabond,  thepubsofyork.com will be the most up-to-date, relevant and comprehensive guide to pubs and beers in York.

Sometimes insightful, most definitely honest and rarely intentionally funny thepubsofyork.com will firstly provide reviews of all the hostelries within the city walls ……

Then, with a good headwind, sturdy boots and a rapacious thirst, explore further afield to incorporate the rest of York, then the outlying villages then, then, then ……… wherever our chubby little legs take us in search of a good pint.

thepubsofyork.com have been into and supped in all the establishments listed herein at LEAST twice, and generally, for the vast majority, a lot more, our favourite purveyors of ale have been visited hundreds of times.

The opinions expressed on these pages are just that, opinions of two gentlemen with a penchant for beer and pubs, who for some reason have decided to start a website and share our inane drivel (usually reserved for bored friends and comatose partners) with beer and pub lovers who are bored at work on their lunch hour, in the forlorn hope of garnering an iota of interest and quite possibly, a few replies and some constructive reviews.

Whilst the title of the website hints at the  type of establishment that shall be reviewed, for clarification purposes, we shall only be commenting on places where:

  • you are able to purchase a pint/bottle of ale/beer for consumption on the premises without requiring to pay for entry (e.g. nightclubs/trendy bars)
  • you can purchase a pint/bottle of ale for consumption on the premises without requiring to pay for some other service (e.g. Hotels without public bars, B&B’s, museums that serve alcohol and definitely not strip clubs)
  • the ordering of food must not be a pre-requisite of having a drink (so this rules out restaurants which are not café bars)
  • to enjoy a beer, you must not be required to be a member of the establishment (e.g. Clubs, Casinos etc.).

We could get a pub totally wrong, say it’s ‘orrible when the vast majority of patrons think it’s smashing, but, with regular re-visits and updates and comments from thepubsofyork.com and ye, fair readers, we hope a sense of fairness and honesty prevails.

For any further information, for a quick chat or to find out what our favourite brand of pork scratchings are, please drop us a line at hello@thepubsofyork.com or use the ‘contact’ page.

This website is in no way shape or form a poorly disguised excuse to go out and drink beer in pubs.
